Different, Disabled, But ‘Unbroken’

Unbroken, and author/editor Marieke Jijkamp

Our October selection is Unbroken: 13 Stories Starring Disabled Teens, edited by Marieke Nijkamp, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of This Is Where It Ends. Whatever your own identity or ability, we think you’ll find pieces of yourself in these short stories, each featuring disabled characters and written by disabled creators. The collection includes tales of interstellar war, a journey to Persia, a dating debacle… The teenaged characters reflect diverse colors, genders, and orientations, without obscuring the realities of their disabilities.

Pick up a copy at the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, or our own little free library at Elementz, and plan to join our youth-led book chat at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27. You might win a WVXU/D&M swag bag, including a copy of our November book, Gord Hill’s 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book. In December, we’ll be reading and talking about Other Words for Home, by Cincinnati native Jamine Warga.
